Why

Stony Brook?

The emergency medicine program at Stony Brook has it all. It is a three year residency program that not only trains young physicians in the clinical practice of emergency medicine but also offers many unique opportunities that are not available at other institutions.

Firstly, we are the Level 1 Trauma center in Suffolk County and therefore see a wide array of clinical conditions and serve a very large and diverse patient population. We see approximately 1000 code T or full Trauma activation's a year.  Our Critical Care department is staffed by very well-known innovators in our field. Being the level 1 trauma center, we are the Suffolk county medical control center and therefore work very closely with EMS in providing good patient care in the field during the crucial pre-hospital window.

Here at Stony Brook, we have dynamic conference days each week that integrates textbook learning with evidence based medicine and team based learning. We have a state of the art simulation center where we can re-enforce lessons learned in the classroom and apply it to our everyday practice. We are also a national leader in research with no lack of opportunity of research regardless of area of interest. We have many opportunities for international medicine so that we can exchange ideas and gain experience working in other locations globally.

What is perhaps most important is that, here, we also think of ourselves as a family. Although we are a very diverse group with many different interests and backgrounds, we have a very deep seeded sense of respect and appreciation for our peers which creates a good work environment and ultimately helps us provide the best care possible for patients.  The sense of comradery sets us apart from other programs. Our hospital is located a short train ride from New York City but also close to the beaches, farms and vineyards. We take advantage of our ideal location and make the most of our time off.

We all agree that we are lucky to be at Stony Brook. We get to work side by side with a strong and distinguished faculty, have every opportunity at our disposal, and get to grow along with our peers. Stony Brook fosters the ideal learning environment to motivate us not only to be competent in the practice of emergency medicine but to become the best and most well rounded emergency physician possible.
