EM Administration


Emergency Medicine Administration Fellowship


This SAEM accredited fellowship is designed to develop future leaders in Emergency Medicine. The fellow will gain extensive experience in departmental and hospital management. Fellows will be exposed to a wide breadth of experiences that will provide the essential skills to lead a department and/or enter the world of hospital administration. Additionally, the fellow will have the opportunity to develop a niche in analytics, finance, informatics, research, and/or education. Our department has a 3-year residency and is part of a complex academic medical center giving fellows the opportunity to gain experience managing in a complex environment. Fellows will be expected to complete an MHA, MBA, or MPH during their fellowship unless they have already completed one of those degrees. Fellows with no advanced degree will complete 2 years of training. Those who already have a degree can commit to 1 or 2 years (2 years recommended).


Program Highlights:

1) Tertiary Care Emergency Department with over 100,000 visits per year

2) Stony Brook Comprehensive Stroke Center, Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Center, and Chest Pain Center

3) Fellows will have the opportunity to be involved with all aspects of departmental management

4) Substantial opportunity to participate in hospital administration

5) Opportunities to gain significant IT experience (The fellowship director also serves as a Deputy CMIO for Stony Brook Medicine)

6) Our department has support for research activities including a full-time statistician

7) We enjoy an excellent relationship with nursing leadership. This will help ensure fellows have every opportunity to be successful in implementing new initiatives

8) Well-developed resuscitation, EMS, international, and ultrasound divisions will allow the fellow to explore administrative issues related to those areas

9) Collaboration with Stony Brook University Math, Engineering, and Computer Science Departments
